Great short definition, Jerry!
It seems like a lot of people don’t really know what PR is and with an every changing and evolving climate there are so many definitions! It also greatly depends on who/what you do PR for!
I also think it matters where you do PR - the US market differs a lot from the Swedish for example.

Thanks! I agree - I heard somewhere that there are some 2000 definitions accounted for!

Public relations people help their organizations manage their relationships with key stakeholders. PR people do not maintain relationships with investors, bankers, customers, etc., but they help those within the organization who do. They often do involve themselves on behalf of their organizations with local communities, the general public, employees, but most of an organization's relationships are the responsibility of others. How they do this is another story.

Thanks for commenting, Peggy!

I had exactly that in mind, hence "publics". Key publics are the perfect segmentation for PR relevant individuals or groups of individuals, especially in the era of social media.

I'm actually planning on writing a blog post on the subject; outlining the term from back when sociologist John Dewey coined it, via James Grunig and his "hangarounds", and to this day!
